European Environment Ministers failed Monday to approve a variety of Monsanto Co.'s Roundup Ready corn, according to published reports.

Because the 25 environment ministers did not approve the corn, the European Commission will now have to make the final decision. On June 25, the commission approved Monsanto's application to sell a variety of its genetically modified corn and recommended that the union's member governments approve the application for the NK603 corn as well.

The commission said it would make a decision "within weeks," the report said. If it approves the corn, it would allow use for 10 years within the European Union only for animal feed, not for cultivation or human food.

Last December, the European Food Safety Commission said the corn was safe for animal and human consumption last December. Five European countries rejected approval of the corn in February.

St. Louis-based Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON) develops insect- and herbicide-resistant crops and other agricultural products.
