~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Consumer groups and family farmers have been fighting for years to require mandatory country-of-origin-labeling (COOL) on meat, fruits, and vegetables in the United States. Now Congress is considering delaying it yet another year, until 2007. Let Congress know you deserve to know what you are eating at: http://action.citizen.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1203.
Many other countries have these labeling rules, and the U.S. already requires seafood to be labeled. Our new analysis: http://www.citizen.org/documents/COOL.pdf shows how millions of dollars spent in lobbying and elections has helped thwart this key law. Mandatory COOL enables consumers to make informed decisions about the food they eat; for instance, you could choose to buy food that travels less distance or is from countries with strong food safety records. Moreover, COOL allows domestic farmers and ranchers to differentiate their product from imports.
A national poll conducted this year found that 85% of the public wants mandatory COOL, and 74% think that Congress should pass a bill requiring this information. In fact, this law was supposed to go into effect in 2004, but big industry wants to keep consumers in the dark, and continues to try to delay COOL or kill it. Write to Congress asking them to enact mandatory COOL immediately! http://action.citizen.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1203. Thank you!
