Letter from Concnerned Organic Consumer to Nature's Gate
Editor's Note: One of our readers sent the OCA a copy of the following letter, which they had written to Nature's Gate in regards to the recent discovery yof the possible 1,4-Dioxane in the "organic" products:
To Whom It May Concern,
One hour ago I was giving my children a bath, with filtered water. As I washed their hair (with Nature's Gate Organics Shampoo) I was thinking about how lucky I was to be able to buy natural and organic products for them. How lucky I was to be able to shield them from the harsh carcinogenic chemicals that are in so many personal care products.
Then I put my children to bed and checked my email... Incidentally I receive the Organic Consumers Association (OCA)
Newsletter.
Well I have to hand it to you. Your company has just taught me a lesson that I knew but complacently forgot. Most Big Corporations are full of green wash. Happy to promote an image of organic, reap the profits, sell out their customers and make a buck. Boy you people sure fooled me.
Needless to say when I read the OCA's report I felt angry, lied to, cheated and generally bent out of shape. I have been buying your hair care products for years and was happy to switch over to your organic line when it came out. In a perfect world you all would owe me several thousand dollars in product - purchased under false pretenses. As it is your lying and cheating will be left to your conscience. But for obvious reasons I don't think that you will lose any sleep.
You have however lost a customer. And believe me I like to talk so with any luck I will cause you to lose a few more in the coming days.
P.S. Please look for a box containing two brand new gallons of shampoo I recently purchased. I would feel guilty putting it in our land fill with it being so chemical laden and all. The least you can do is dispose of it for me. This way I'll have a little satisfaction instead of the frustration and anger I feel right now.

Wishing that more people who have been duped by the greenwashing would do the same.

I am sorry you feel duped, but even if a company labels their organic product as organic, if it doesn't contain the USDA Organic seal, then you still have to read the ingredients. There are no laws that companies can't dump crap ingredients in their organic formulas. Look for the USDA label for now, which is limited to only a few product lines. Other than that, we are just out of luck.

sorry, i beg to differ. the very fact that there is a USDA sticker means very little to me as the organics industry has been bought and sold by our government. even if it has the sticker does not stop them from adding up to 65% non-organic ingredients. they are allowed to use the sticker if there is a percentage of "Organic" ingredients. yet they are now trying to push the use of sludge as fertilizer and calling it organic as well. make your own soap and buy local..... annie

OCA?s more concerned with consumer confusion surrounding the word ?organic,? than with whether or not the products are actually safe for your use. Thus the OCA will sometimes yell and scream about how a product with ?organic? in its name includes a non-organic ingredient, and make the product sound really bad ? when the product is actually quite safe (though not organic). I can see OCA?s point about consumer confusion surrounding the organic label but their actions also sometimes create additional confusion on the part of the consumer who might then ?give up? trying to find good products and go back to using unhealthy, chemicalized stuff.
Healthy personal care products really do make a difference; all sorts of skin and health problems you?ve learned to live with may simply be caused by your less-than-green shampoo or makeup. So check the ingredients and product evaluation of EWG, they are really independent and are not bought by any so called natural company trying to promote their new organic line...
Hey don't forget that USDA NOP does not count water or salt for considering a product organic. Simply put, if a product has 1% of organic ingredient and 99% of water it still will be called organic and display the USDA seal in its label... and for your consideration the main ingredient of any shampoo or liquid soaps that are in market with USDA seal is: WATER!!!!
So OCA should be working in creating a valid standard for this unregulated market and not trying to convince that USDA NOP (a food grade standard) is the best option to certify personal care products...

Yeah there's some confusion I'm a bit confused too but working on it. I think most companies like Nature's Gate try to bank on the whole organic consumer movement. They see $$$ signs.

We should all do something like this. Write the company's we use and express our displeasure at the use of this (or other) ingredient, urge them to clean up there act, and not just threaten but be willing to change brands until they do so. Folks vote with your dollar, and let them know your doing so.
