NEWARK - When Jen Ward moved to Newark with her husband two years ago, she embraced her adopted home but missed something she left behind in Arizona.
In Tucson, after the mother of four tucked her children into bed, she would slip away to a funky local coffeehouse to study and meet with friends. In late April, Ward quietly opened her own shop, Twilight Coffee, on the southeast corner of the Courthouse Square in Newark.
Struck by the city's architecture and historic photos of the downtown as a bustling center, Ward said she chose the name Twilight Coffee because twilight represented the potential for change.
"To see (downtown Newark) empty and basically breathless nearly broke my heart, coming from a place of glass buildings," Ward said. "Even though it's in its twilight, there's potential for the heart of the city to be revitalized."
Twilight Coffee is the first business for Ward, 28. She spent a year remodeling the space, which had been vacant since chiropractor Angela Mead moved out in July 2006. Bass Studios of Columbus and Central Ohio Remodeling completed the design and construction.
