A survey conducted by The Hartman Group has concluded that nearly 8 out of 10 consumers buy products that they perceive to be produced locally, and that organic products make up a "significant portion" of such purchases.
Alhough the phrase "buy local" may not be very precise, the report found that "Made or produced within 100 miles" is a popular definition of local producers.
Interest in local products is influenced by consumer curiosity, concerns over freshness, and a belief that local economies and the environment benefit when consumers buy locally, the report said.
In another finding, the report stated that 82 percent of consumers preferred supporting products made in their state or community.
The report was based on a survey of 796 respondents conducted in December, 2007 through Hartman Interactive.
