Boone County - The controversy over a new Wal-Mart in Zionsville could end Monday evening. The Plan Commission will consider the retailer's petition again when it meets Monday night.
Plans for a new Wal-Mart at 11000 North Michigan Road have been a controversial battle lasting for more than a year now.
The Plan commission originally denied Wal-Mart's petition, saying it had no jurisdiction because some of the property was in Hamilton County. Wal-Mart sued the town, and a Boone County special judge sent the petition back to the Plan Commission.
Residents have strongly opposed a Wal-Mart SuperCenter, fearing it would hurt local businesses and change the culture of their town. But after a long battle, it seems like a few more people are now warming up to the idea.
"I don't think the Wal-Mart will really hurt that bad. This is more of a niche community. We have certain things that Wal-Mart doesn't offer, and they're gonna buy Wal-Mart stuff anyway so we might as well enjoy the tax benefits from Wal-Mart," said one resident.
