The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that certain artificial turf fields be tested for lead and that young children should be kept away from fields with high lead levels. The agency's advisory was prompted by recent field tests in New Jersey that revealed lead levels exceeding a standard of 400 milligrams per kilogram. The state Department of Health and Senior Services initially discovered the problem while testing a turf field near a scrap metal company in Newark in April.
New Jersey epidemiologist Dr. Eddy Bresnitz said the lead levels were not high enough to cause poisoning in people who play on the fields. However, he said the levels could cause more damage in children already exposed to lead.
Still, several North Jersey schools independently tested their artificial turf, with some finding high levels of lead. Northern Valley Regional School District, Ramapo High School and Indian Hills High School have all closed their fields for athletic events.
