Parents Lack Closure in Daycare Case

FRANKLIN TWP. For two years, children as young as 8 months to 13 years old attended a daycare here all the while being exposed to mercury contamination.

Now two years have passed since Kiddie Kollege Daycare Center, which had been operating on the site of a former mercury thermometer factory, closed its doors. The incident has prompted legislation to prevent future situations from occurring, and the building itself is slated for demolition.

But as another year passes, parents whose children attended Kiddie Kollege say they don't feel they have been given any closure.

"For me, it's just as fresh a cut today as it was two years ago," said Tina Toy, whose two daughters attended the day care.

Kiddie Kollege was shuttered on July 28, 2006 after the state Department of Environmental Protection discovered elevated mercury levels at the Station Avenue site. The daycare had been operating for two years in the former Accutherm building.
