ST. LOUIS, Aug 06, 2008 - Monsanto Company...announced today that it is pursuing a divestiture of its dairy product, POSILAC(R) bovine somatotropin, in the upcoming months. Additional details have not been disclosed at this time. "While POSILAC is a strong product for the business, we believe repositioning the business with a strategic owner will allow Monsanto to focus on the growth of its core seeds and traits business while ensuring that loyal dairy farmers continue to receive the value of POSILAC in their operations," said Carl Casale, Monsanto's Executive Vice-President of Strategy and Operations.

Agriculture biotech giant Monsanto Co. said it is planning to sell its business that produces a controversial hormone used to boost milk production in dairy cows.
The company said it plans to sell the commercial business for Posilac, including the intellectual property and a manufacturing facility in Augusta, Ga. Additional details weren't disclosed.

This is just a PR stunt unfortunately. Ever ask the average joe or a relative from outside the enlightened community if they've ever heard of Monsanto? 9 out of 10 say no. The truth hurts. Knowledge is power. Obviously there was pressure from a few percentage points of market share shifting somewhere. Sad but true.
