Effective October 2008 (just-in-time for the beginning of the school year), the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine becomes one of the many vaccines added to the Virginia Immunization Schedule for girls entering the sixth grade.

What? Are you kidding me?

No-we are not kidding. See for yourself. According to the Code of Virginia Section 32.1-46 (A) (12):

(Effective October 1, 2008) Three doses of properly spaced human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for females. The first dose shall be administered before the child enters the sixth grade.

Ahhh..but there’s a catch! What they won’t tell you is that, although Virginia does not have a conscientious/philosophical exemption for mandatory vaccines, legislators included an exception for the HPV vaccine. Code of Virginia Section 32.1-46 (D) (3):

(Effective October 1, 2008) Because the human papillomavirus is not communicable in a school setting, a parent or guardian, at the parent’s or guardian’s sole discretion, may elect for the parent’s or guardian’s child not to receive the human papillomavirus vaccine, after having reviewed materials describing the link between the human papillomavirus and cervical cancer approved for such use by the Board.

Although this new mandate includes an exception it’s a step in the WRONG direction. Our CAM-V (Coalition Against Mandatory Vaccination) initiative is in full swing! If you believe in the right of a person to choose whether or not to be vaccinated and would like to help ensure that Virginia legislators don’t try and add another mandatory vaccine when no one’s looking you can help AAHF and our new initiate CAM-V by:
