The Organic Consumers Association and the Teamsters Union this week joined in a campaign urging Whole Foods to pressure Beef Northwest to settle a dispute with United Farm Workers.
UFW is trying to unionize workers at the Eastern Oregon feedlot.
Beef Northwest finishes cattle for County Natural Beef, which sells meats at Whole Foods markets.
In a press release dated Sept. 29, Ronnie Cummins, executive director of the Organic Consumers Association, said: "Whole Foods has led the industry in implementing humane standards for meat, dairy and seafood production, yet has lagged behind protecting domestic farmworkers and other agriculture workers."
Teamsters president Jim Hoffa said in the press release: "Workers' rights are just as important as eliminating pesticides on food and stopping animal abuse. It's time that Whole Foods truly starts living up to its marketing strategy."
UFW and Beef Northwest are embroiled in a dispute over how to determine if feedlot workers want to unionize.
