Both sides of the issue on whether to put a Wal-Mart Supercenter at Macon and Houston Levee roads are galvanizing — again — for what could be a final showdown while accusing each other of deception.

A Shelby County Commission committee will address today whether to reverse the Land Use Control Board’s approval in July of building a 151,908-square-foot supercenter store on the intersection’s northwest corner.

The full commission is scheduled to hear the case on Monday after delaying the matter in September. It and the Memphis City Council will both vote on a joint resolution on the appeal.

Citizens for Sustainable Growth — a coalition of organizations opposing the project — will have a public organizational meeting on the issue at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Cordova Community Center at 1017 Sanga. The group said it has gathered thousands of petitions against the project to offset the 2,000 signatures Wal-Mart collected supporting the Supercenter.

It also publicly alleges that the retail giant used deception in gathering its signatures, such as lying about the petition’s purpose and downplaying the project’s size.
