Brooklyn: Residents Lining up to Fight New Wal-Mart

Plans to build a 158,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter on Providence Road at Route 6 have residents reeling and preparing for what could be a serious fight.

"Basically, we're feeling shocked," resident Alison Henault said. "I guess we never really saw a big-box store coming into Brooklyn."

Henault said after reading about the plan she joined a group of residents attempting to fight the store's arrival. They called Al Norman of sprawl-busters.com, famous for stopping Wal-Mart from entering his hometown of Greenfield, Mass.

Norman said he has answered questions from four residents, offered tips for organizing and about which issues to pursue. He also has offered to continue to answer questions.

Henault said she knows of many other groups forming to fight the proposal. She said residents are angry about the possibility of the giant merchandise and grocery store locating in Brooklyn.

First Selectman Roger Engle said he has been inundated with complaints and comments from residents.

Engle said the town did not solicit Wal-Mart. Company representatives came to town a year ago to discuss possible interest, but Engle said he has been bound by a confidentiality agreement since then.

He said Wal-Mart is interested in the property on Providence Road, but has not bought any land in town or filed any applications.
