Northside Grocery Press Conference

When Lea Webb was selected to be one of just 80 women to attend Women Rule! in 2008, she hoped to utilize her passion, network, and skills as a community organizer and elected official to bring fresh, healthy, and accessible food to her town.  For fifteen years, the low-income neighborhood she represents on the Binghamton City Council went without a grocery store - impacting seniors, veterans, and families the hardest - and forcing residents to rely on gas stations and long bus rides for access to food.

At a press conference this past Friday, Lea and her community came one large step closer to their goal when New York Senate President Malcolm Smith presented a $150,000 check in support of the grocery store. Lea, who was introduced by Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan at the press conference, credited both The White House Project and O, The Oprah Magazine for their support along the way.
