Protracted Radiation Exposure and Cancer Mortality in the Techa River Cohort
Protracted Radiation Exposure and Cancer Mortality in the Techa River Cohort (Radiation Research 2005; 164:602-611) traces radiation exposures to 29,873 people born before 1950 who lived downstream from the Mayak plutonium production complex. Radioactive material was released from the plant during the years 1949-1956, resulting in a solid cancer death rate of 2.5% and 63% of the leukemia deaths. The study fails to explain why there is such a large discrepancy between the two rates but it does offer further evidence of significant risk at low and slow dose exposure.
