Have you been “voting liberal?”

New Hampshire State House Speaker William O’Brien thinks you are and he wants to end it. And it’s not just New Hampshire. In response to “liberal young voters,” Speaker O’Brien and other state house leaders have begun an all-out assault on student voting. Since 2002, there has been a push in many states to pass legislation that makes it more difficult for students to vote.

Last week, we exposed a plot by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative organization linked to the billionaire Koch brothers, to work with states to write and pass legislation that blocks students from voting.

Thanks to the work of student activists in New Hampshire, efforts to block student voting there were beaten back last week. But threats to voting still exist around the country. And they’re expanding. Wisconsin is close to passing a bill making it harder for students to vote, and by 2012, there could be dozens more states with similar laws.
