South Florida Crop Mob, Verde Gardens, Homestead Harvest Farmer's Market, organized by Bambi Liss-Saltzman, CLICK HERE FOR PICTURES
- Earth Learning's First Crop Mob on October 16, 2011. To give you a bit of history, the idea for the Crop Mob came as a direct result of the 2nd Annual Greater Everglades Food Summit held on September 28 - October 5. One of the speakers Rob Jones, started Crop Mobs in North Carolina as a way to support small farmers to get a lot of work done in a half a day, followed by breaking bread together and simply having a good time, learning about farming and making a huge difference for the farmer. The meal for all was prepared with Locally Grown Organic produce. The menu included Barbecued Young Jackfruit on whole grain buns as the main dish with Organically Grown brown rice grown in Deland, FL, a kidney and cannelini bean stew with callaloo, a salad with avocado's and papaya, fresh squeezed lime juice and sea salt. Dessert was a raisin, almond nut ball rolled in coconut. During the crop mob the group of over 35 volunteers planted over 100 fruit trees in a food forest designed by Farmer Apprentices from Earth Learning at Verde Gardens. Verde Gardens is a community recently created and designed with 145 green homes for designated homeless families in Homestead, FL. Carrfour Supportive Housing, Miami Dade County and the USDA together created this project. Earth Learning of South Miami was given the project to create a 22 acre Organic Farm and manage a Farmers Market to create jobs and fresh organic produce for the community. Feel free to google Verde Gardens to read the whole story which originated by the Clinton Global Initiative.

Petition gathering outside the Mustard Seed Cafe, organized by Angela Trivonovich
ATHENS, OH - Oct 22nd
From organizer Austin Stahl:
- We gathered 264 signatures for the petition at the Farmer's Market, The Farmacy, Casa Nueva, and Village Bakery. I personally was at the farmer's market, and got to meet many people that shared a similar passion for issues caused by GM foods and also talked to many small family farmers about all the issues surrounding GMOs and small farming. I also got the contact information of the owner of the Shagbark Seed and Mill Company, a non-GMO seed and grain supplier in the area, after talking with him about such issues for a while. It was a great experience, and organized and completely done by college students! Unfortunately, we do not have any pictures or videos of our work. I will send in the petitions to the OCA headquarters.
- I think we definitely made a difference in the city of Athens. Athens is a great place to do things like this, with a lot of family and organic farmers in the area (many of them Amish) and a strong local food movement. There are lots of little neat restaurants and stores that use ingredients right from the farms and things like that. I would suggest that you guys reach out a little bit to the city of Athens and try to get a leader of some sort to organize events and activities out here. I will help as much as I can, but I am still only a college freshman and I am pretty weighed down with a heavy class load, work, and school activities. But the people out here are very receptive to everything OCA stands for and pretty involved in the Slow Food Movement. I really think there is a lot of potential out here.
