Keep Food Safe and Affordable: Co-Sponsor H.R. 4432, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act

Just a few of weeks ago, we gathered to honor Norman Borlaug with a statue in the United States Capitol. Mr. Borlaug was quite appropriately known as “The Man Who Saved a Billion Lives” for his pioneering work in using biotechnology to feed a hungry and growing world.

Virtually every serious medical and scientific organization, such as the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the British Royal Society, and the World Health Organization, have stated that these life-saving technologies pose no danger to human health. The use of biotechnology increases crop yields and disease resistance while reducing the use of pesticides and water-helping to keep food affordable for American families.

Unfortunately there is a tremendous amount of misunderstanding surrounding the use of biotechnology. Unfounded fears about their safety has led to a chaotic regime of often contradictory state regulations that could greatly affect our ability to feed America and the world. Today, I, along with Congressman G.K. Butterfield, introduced H.R. 4432, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act. This bill will provide an effective and mandatory process for FDA oversight of the introduction of foods using biotechnology while providing predictable, nationwide standards for this increasingly important technology.
