Board Member Books
Two recently published books are edited by members of the Oversight Board.
1. CHERNOBYL: 20 YEARS ON (2006), edited by UK physicist Chris Busby and Russian biologist Alexey Yablokov, is the first book to document a wide range of noncancer diseases attributable to the Chernobyl fallout from previously unpublished Russian scientific papers. The World Health Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, and the International Commission on Radiological Protection have had these studies in hand for several years but have refused to translate them. This book is now available online, free full text, at euradcom.org. The authors challenge the conventional wisdom that low levels of ionizing radiation pose little risk to the public health and safety. In fact, the consequences have been measured in Russia, Europe, and around the world.
2. HALF-LIVES & HALF-TRUTHS: CONFRONTING THE RADIOACTIVE LEGACIES OF THE COLD WAR, edited by anthropologist Barbara Rose Johnston, presents a compelling analysis of years of official secrecy in both the United States and Russia. The stark reality of the atomic testing program, from uranium mining to test site releases, is a story that provides a necessary backdrop to the Cold War. It is hot off the press and is available at bookstores or from the publisher, sarpress.sarweb.org.
