Southeast Milk, Inc., the largest dairy co-op in the southeast, announced it was going rBGH-free as of September 1. They said they made the decision because three of their customers told them they didn't want the hormone. One of them, Publix Super Markets, based in Lakeland, FL, had announced a few weeks ago that they had gone rBGH-free in response to consumer comments.
In the northeast, Eat'n Park Restaurants, a family restaurant chain with 77 locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, announced it was also only serving rBGH-free milk. They are partnering with Turner Dairy in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg Dairy to supply their milk. Eat'n Park had already discontinued trans-fats and has been concentrating on serving local, seasonal foods. "Now," said Brooks Broadhurst, Senior Vice President, "We are proud to serve only milk with no added hormones."
Monsanto, of course, continues to insist there is no consumer demand for rBGH-free milk.
