Dear Friends,
It has been nearly eight months since Oxfam began its efforts to raise awareness of the efforts by Ethiopians to gain control over the names of their finest coffees. Since then, many organizations have joined the campaign calling on Starbucks and other roasters to honor their commitments to coffee farmers by signing an agreement recognizing Ethiopia's ownership of its coffee names. I am writing to let you know that today Starbucks and Ethiopia signed an agreement which recognizes the rights of Ethiopians to control the use of their coffee names. Though much work remains to be done to make the Ethiopian initiative a success, this development is historic and holds the potential to create a new paradigm that gives farmers around the world a fairer share of the retail profits that come from their products.
This achievement was only possible because so many organizations and individuals helped bring global attention to the issue. Over 96,000 people worldwide contacted Starbucks to express their support of Ethiopian farmers. I want to express Oxfam's gratitude to all those who contributed to this important achievement for coffee farmers. Oxfam will continue its longstanding work directly with farmer organizations in Ethiopia providing them with support to take advantage of this new market paradigm as it develops. We look forward to keeping you informed and to collaborating in the future.
Sincerely,
Seth Petchers
