Attorney General Jerry Brown has sued 20 companies, including Mattel Inc. and
Toys R Us, accusing them of selling toys that contain unlawful amounts of lead
and failing to warn the public of the health dangers. Brown’s lawsuit, filed
Monday in Alameda County Superior Court, alleges that the companies violated the
Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, a voter-approved law
passed as Proposition 65, because they didn’t notify customers of toys in the
marketplace that contained high concentrations of lead.

attorney general sued a who’s who of toy manufacturers, retailers and department
stores Monday, alleging that they knowingly exposed individuals to lead and
failed to warn consumers about the health hazard in violation of Proposition 65.
Attorney General Jerry Brown filed an 11-page complaint Monday against 20
companies, including Mattel, Fisher-Price, Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, Costco, Toys
‘R’ Us and KB Toys, in Alameda County Superior Court.
