What Happens to Your Body Within an Hour of Drinking a Coke

Do you want to be healthy? Drinking soda is bad for your health in so many ways; science can't even state all the consequences. Here's what happens in your body when you assault it with a Coke:

Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don't vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor.

Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.

Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.

Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain - a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.

After 60 minutes, you'll start to have a sugar crash.

There is another interesting reason for the reactions to Coke. The Journal of Dental Research, Special Issue, Vol. 69, Feb. 1990, Posters #7, page 827, reports that in coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola, the caffeine combines with the fluorides, results in a two-fold increase in the blood plasma. No wonder there is so much hyperactive kids and adults.

I'm lost -- what does blood plasma have to do with hyperactivity? Maybe blood plasma *glucose* level?

As to the original article, what they've found with caffeine is that the effects on neophytes don't fit for long timers ... including the BG dump via the liver and dehydration. But putting that much sugar, which is actually HFCS and is more insulin-boosting than even basic table sugar, into your system probably leads to diabetes. OTOH, you get very near the same effect from eating a cup of rice or a baked potato; that's basic carbohydrate chemistry, where a carb is a carb is a carb. Eating food fat prolongs the absorbtion, so a baked potato with sour cream and butter is initially better, less of a BG spike, but carbs + fat = clogged arteries and high cholesterol and all that. High-carbing does that by itself. The only way out is to cut the carbs. How much depends on physiology and ancestry, but starches are as tough on the pancreas as is a nice, sugary soda. --diana

Besides health issues, you may not wish to spend your money on soft drinks manufacturers because of their political contributions and influence and their negative impact on global warming, the welfare of their workers and the environment and people living near their factories.

True. Pretty hard to buy local and buy soft drinks! We're experimenting on growing our own tea stocks, for something interesting to drink ... chamomile grows all over in the midwest, for example. There are options, including just drinking ice water when one is out and about. Most dining spots are fine with that, if it accompanies a food order. --diana
