WHAT CAN WE DO?

OCA's Guidelines for Local Grassroots Action

We now have active volunteers in all 50 states who are tabling at farmers' markets and health food stores, generating phone calls and letters to food companies demanding they go GE-free,
encouraging their local school districts to provide organic lunches for students, and organizing
leafleting and protests outside supermarkets. Our work has just begun, however, and we need your help in our campaign to convert American agriculture to a safe, healthy and sustainable system of food and fiber production.. Please read on to find out how you can make a difference.

The cornerstone of OCA's campaign work is Food Agenda 2000-2010. The three points on the Agenda are the same demands that millions of consumers in Europe are asking of their governments, food retailers, and manufacturers.

FOOD AGENDA 2000-2010:

  1. Implement a US (and global) Moratorium on all Genetically Engineered Foods and Crops.
  2. Put an end to Factory Farming. Begin the immediate phase-out of the most dangerous practices of industrial agriculture with a goal of significantly reducing the use of toxic chemicals and animal drugs on conventional farms by the year 2010.
  3. Convert US farms to at least 30% Organic by the Year 2010. We demand government funding and implementation of transition to organic programs so that at least 30% of US agriculture is organic by the Year 2010-with a strong emphasis on production for local and regional markets by small and medium-sized organic farmers.

In the US, the implementation of Food Agenda 2000-2010 will require the development of mass-based Grassroots Action Networks nationwide and will encompass a variety of different activities. There are many ways you can help develop these networks.

I. HELP CIRCULATE THE OCA's FOOD AGENDA 2000-2010 PETITION AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Encourage people to participate locally (http://www.purefood.org/participate.htm) to oppose GE foods and support organic agriculture. We have a database system for two-way communication to notify and organize folks in their local area. Contact business owners and others and ask them if they will distribute our materials. You can also download a copy of our petition and take it with you to public events (check the calendar of your local paper to see what's coming up).

Download a copy or the FOOD AGENDA 2000-2010 PETITION to distribute. Sign the FOOD AGENDA 2000-2010 PETITION on line

Suggestions for petition gathering:

  • Health food stores/Co-ops
  • Eco-Friendly businesses
  • College Campuses

II. CONTACT AMERICA's LARGEST FOOD COMPANIES (THE FRANKENFOODS 15) AND LET THEM KNOW YOU WILL NOT EAT FRANKENFOODS

Contact all of the 15 companies listed below (Call, Fax or email via their website) and demand assurance from each that their products do not contain genetically engineered ingredients. Tell them you will not purchase their foods or beverages unless they can provide you with written assurance that they have gone GE-free. Many of these companies have double standards and have pledged to not use these ingredients in their European products.

Make a tax-deductible donation to help support our efforts and help us find other donors andsupporters for our work.

V. BUY ORGANIC AND BUY LOCAL!

Help promote the alternatives to genetic engineering. Purchase only certified organic foods from your local co-op, health food store, farmers markets or through Community Supported Agriculture program. Remember to vote with your dollars!!

  • Locate a co-op or health food store near you which sells organic food.
  • Locate a Community Supported Agriculture Farm near you
  • Locate your local Farmers' Market
  • Locate other eco-friendly businesses and services, environmental organizations and community events

VI. POLITICAL ACTION

Help us put pressure on elected public officials and regulatory agencies to:

  1. Demand either an outright GE moratorium or comprehensive mandatory labeling of all GE food and fiber products;
  2. Mandatory, stringent pre-market safety-testing of all GE products;
  3. Mandatory long-term liability insurance for GE corporations and labs.

Contact your local city/township or county clerk to find who your elected officials are and demand they take action on this urgent issue.

There are currently bills in the House (HR-3377) and in the Senate (S-2080) requiring the labeling of GE foods. Contact your local members of Congress and urge them to support these bills:

Find your Congressional Representative:
http://www.house.gov

Find your US Senators: http://www.senate.gov/

VII. PASS A LOCAL RESOLUTION - GET YOUR CITY & SCHOOLS TO GO ORGANIC

Urge your city council, school board, precinct caucus, student council, PTA, or local environmental organization to pass a resolution calling for a moratorium on genetically engineered (GE) foods and crops until they are proven safe and to:

  1. Give preference to certified organic during vendors during any and all contract negotiations.
  2. Provide organic lunches in local schools.
  3. Distribute education materials about GE foods to students and local grocers.

VIII. ALERT THE MEDIA

Contact media outlets in your area and ask them if they are planning to run a story on genetically engineered foods. Offer to provide them with the phone number of local or national spokesperson from OCA (You can call 218-726-1443 or email)

Give them a copy of the GE fact sheet. Write a letter to the editor and send it to all the print media in your area, including daily papers, weekly papers, neighborhood papers, college papers and newsletters.
