White House Promises to Support Biotech

The Clinton administration is reportedly committed to bolstering the biotechnology industry through federal funding of science-based research and development.

Greg Simon, domestic policy adviser to Vice President Al Gore, told participants in a biotechnology industry conference in Washington, D.C. last week that the administration will continue to back the biotechnology industry "second to none."

Similarly, Catherine Woteki of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy said despite shrinking discretionary budgets, she hoped that in ten years "we can look back and say that the decade of the 1990s was the decade of continued vigorous research and successful commercialization of agricultural biotechnology products."

The Federal Coordinating Council on Science, Engineering and Technology's subcommittee on biotechnology research is scheduled to release a report by the end of January emphasizing research needs in the areas of manufacturing and bioprocessing, bioremediation, agriculture and aquaculture.
