What’s the Right Thing to Do?

Dear Friend of the OCA,

Fifteen years ago, Rose Welch and I founded the Organic Consumers Association, building on the Pure Food Campaign, a Washington-DC based anti-GMO activist network we had developed between 1992-1998. Operating out of a small,  straw bale  office  in the woods of northern Minnesota, on the shore of Lake  Superior, we took on  the USDA, Monsanto and corporate agribusiness, determined to preserve strict organic standards.

It was an ambitious undertaking for a few dedicated activists operating on the thinnest of shoestrings.

Today, with millions of you on our side, we are taking on Monsanto and Coca-Cola, colossal corporations that are polluting our soil and our food with their genetically modified crops and toxic ingredients.

Thanks to you, we are chipping away at their images, at their sales and most of all, at their lies.

This movement—your movement—is making history.

Sure, we’ve encountered formidable challenges. And suffered some disappointments. But we can’t let a few narrow losses slow us down.

Please help us take on Monsanto and the Junk Food Giants in 2014. If we raise $200,000 by midnight December 31, natural health leader Mercola.com will match our funds. You can
make your tax-deductible donation today to the Organic Consumers Association. Or, if you want your donation to be used exclusively for GMO labeling legislation or initiatives, in Vermont, Oregon or elsewhere, you can donate to the Organic Consumers Fund our allied lobbying arm.

There are now more than 30 states working on GMO labeling initiatives and legislative efforts. Maine and Connecticut passed GMO labeling laws in 2013. Vermont and Oregon are poised to pass laws and initiatives in 2014.

Counties in Oregon, California, and Hawaii are moving to ban the growing of GMO crops.

With your help, we will continue to support these efforts, financially and otherwise. Because we must. The future of our food, our health, this earth and our very existence depends on it.

In a recent interview, poet and farmer Wendell Berry said:

“We don’t have a right to ask whether we’re going to succeed or not. The only question we have a right to ask is what’s the right thing to do? What does this earth require of us if we want to continue to live on it?”

Monsanto and Coca-Cola will continue to pollute and poison as long as the profits pour in. It’s up to us to stop them. Because it’s the right thing to do.

National Director, Organic Consumers Association and Organic Consumers Fund

P.S. Over the past two years, your donations have allowed OCA to donate more than $2.5 million directly to the fight for GMO labeling laws. You have forced Monsanto and Coca-Cola to take this movement seriously. Without you, we would not be where we are today. Without you, we cannnot continue this fight. Thank you!
