Alert: Don't Tie AIDS Prevention Spending for Africa to GE Food

Tell Your Senators:

Don't Tie AIDS Prevention Spending for Africa to GE Food
Call Your Senators TODAY: Ask Them to Support Senate Bill 1009
(S.1009), for unfettered AIDS Relief
The Vote is scheduled for Friday, May 16th!!

An AIDS spending bill proposed this week to the U.S. Senate
includes a provision that could be used to blackmail African
countries that have refused to accept genetically engineered (GE)
food aid. In essence, the bill would tie U.S. support money for
urgently needed AIDS drugs to government acceptance of GE food
aid. A version of this odious bill has passed the House, and Senate
leader Bill Frist is expected to bring the House version of the
legislation to the Senate floor this week. African advocates like
Bread for the World oppose this bill and the outrageous provisions
that would punish African countries for excersing their right to refuse
untested GE foods.

The good news is that there is a version of the AIDS bill on the
Senate side, S 1009, that is much better than the House bill. It is
sponsored Senators Joseph Biden and Richard Lugar. It does not
contain the GE food provision, and has much better language on
AIDS prevention strategies.

CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY! Urge them to support S. 1009,
and let them know that you strongly oppose using TYING U.S. AIDS
SUPPORT MONEY TO ACCEPTANCE OF GE FOOD AID FOR
AFRICAN COUNTRIES. (victims in the biotech industry's genetic
food experiment).
