Kellogg's Company
Attention: Carlos M. Gutierrez, CEO
One Kellogg Square, P.O. Box 3599
Battle Creek, MI 49016
Dear Mr. Gutierrez,
As a health conscious and environmentally-concerned consumer I am upset
about the introduction of untested and potentially hazardous genetically
engineered ingredients-- without my knowledge--into the foods that I
consume and serve to my family. I am dismayed to learn that Kellogg's
uses genetically engineered ingredients in its US breakfast cereals and
other products. I am especially annoyed that while you guarantee your
products are free of genetically engineered ingredients in Europe, you
are not making the same guarantee here in the US. Also, I am told that your
US subsidiary, Morningstar Farms, is now telling consumers that they are
"working towards" guaranteeing that there line of vegetarian soy burgers
do not contain genetically engineered soybeans. If this is true, why can't
you stop being hypocritical and do the same thing with your entire product line?
I have reviewed the current information on genetically engineered foods
and crops and I'm gravely concerned about the effects they could have on
human health and the environment. Since these foods have been rushed to
market, there has been no time to conduct long-term human health studies.
Numerous scientists have warned that genetic engineering could introduce
allergens and novel toxins into food, could lower its nutritional value, and in
the case of milk produced with genetically engineered bovine growth hormone
(rBGH), possibly increase the risk of cancer. Additionally, numerous
environmental studies have shown that the Bt toxin extracted from
bacteria and imbedded into every cell of genetically engineered corn--the corn
found in your breakfast cereal--can be harmful to beneficial soil organisms,
Monarch butterflies, ladybugs, and other species.
If you cannot guarantee me in writing that you are moving to banish
untested, unlabeled genetically engineered food ingredients from your
brand-name products--as you have already done in Europe, and claim you
are are doing this with your soyburgers here in the US--you leave me no
choice but to boycott your products, and to tell everyone else I know to
do the same thing. I look forward to receiving a response from you in writing.
Sincerely,
Name
