Last Chance to Stop Genetically Engineered Wheat!

MESSAGE:
CALL KRAFT CEO ROGER DEROMEDI TODAY at 1-847-646-2000 or
1-800-323-0768, and tell the largest food company in the U.S., Kraft, that you don't want genetically engineered wheat in your cereal, bread, pasta, or other foods!

TAMPERING WITH THE "STAFF OF LIFE"
Monsanto, the corporation that brought us Agent Orange, DDT, and PCBs, is now tampering with the "staff of life" and most widely eaten crop on the planet-wheat. Like its patented Round-up Ready Soy and Corn, Monsanto has engineered wheat to withstand huge applications of a toxic herbicide. Unfortunately, like most engineered crops, genetically engineered (GE) wheat hasn't undergone independent safety testing, is not required to be labeled, and poses risks to our health and environment. And while Round-up Ready Wheat will allow commercial farmers to use more pesticides, it will not substantially increase the yield of wheat or do anything to improve its nutritional value.

Genetically engineered wheat, if grown commercially, will also hurt family farmers. Consumers in Japan, South Korea and Europe - some of the biggest consumers of American wheat - have indicated they do not want an engineered version of the crop. Rejection of genetically engineered corn and soy has already cost U.S. farmers more than $1 billion in lost export markets.

FDA officials, meanwhile, are completing their perfunctory review of Monsanto's application for Round-up Ready wheat. They've provided no deadline for making a decision, but it may come soon.

However, it's NOT TOO LATE to stop genetically engineered wheat. There is growing resistance to its introduction among farmers, consumers and food companies, at home and abroad.

Food companies, especially Kraft, have publicly expressed concerns about consumers rejecting products with engineered ingredients, especially the new engineered wheat. If Kraft, the largest food company in the U.S., rejects wheat, it will send a clear message to farmers not to grow it.

One Kraft official, Ronald Triani, was recently quoted in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as saying "Many, many people are not quite sure what the benefits are, and this, to us, presents something of a problem." He continued by stating that Kraft doesn't know if it will use engineered wheat in its products because its internal polls have shown consumers are uneasy about GE wheat.

Show Kraft its polls are right!

CALL KRAFT TODAY AND URGE THEM TO PROTECT OUR FOOD, FARMERS, ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENT BY PLEDGING NOT TO USE MONSANTO'S ENGINEERED WHEAT!

Call Kraft CEO Roger Deromedi at Kraft Foods Headquarters at 1-847-646-2000 or their consumer hotline at 1-800-323-0768.

Please tell Kraft:
-You are concerned about the health, environmental and economic risks posed by the new genetically engineered wheat and other genetically engineered food, and
-You'll avoid Kraft products that have genetically engineered ingredients

Please ask Kraft to:
-Pledge not to use the new genetically engineered wheat
-Stop using genetically engineered ingredients in its products
-Live up to its promise to do more to ensure a safe food supply

BACKGROUND ON THE KRAFT SAFE FOOD CAMPAIGN
This call will support an ongoing nationwide grassroots campaign demanding that the largest food company in the U.S. stop using potentially hazardous genetically engineered ingredients in its products. Engineered foods like soy and corn are currently in 70 percent of foods on US supermarket shelves but aren't labeled or adequately tested for safety, taking away our right to know what we're eating. Engineered foods also pose unnecessary risks to our health (introducing new allergens and toxins in our food) and environment (creating "superweeds" and increasing pesticide use).

Tens of thousands of people have already called and written Kraft and held more than 900 demonstrations and leafleting events since February 2002-and Kraft is listening. Tests of Kraft products last fall indicate that the corporation may be quietly phasing out genetically engineered ingredients. Kraft's CEO has also acknowledged health risks of these crops and called for stronger regulations. Despite these steps in the right direction, Kraft has not yet done the right thing for our health and the environment by discontinuing use of these risky foods entirely. Please help keep up the pressure on Kraft by calling today!

THANK YOU FOR TAKING A STAND FOR SAFE FOOD!

Please pass this alert on to friends and family. The more calls we make to Kraft, the more likely they'll listen.
