Aventis Pays Out $10 Million for StarLink Damage in Iowa

Aventis Pays Out $10 Million for
StarLink Damage in Iowa

Aventis Pays $9.2M to Iowa Farmers for StarLink

A PorkNet Summary/ -- Iowa farmers and elevators have received a total
of $9.2 million in compensation for losses associated with growing and
handling StarLink, which contaminated the grain supply.

StarLink developer Aventis CropScience made the payments, which
eventually could top $10 million in Iowa alone, according to an assistant
Iowa attorney general. Iowa farmers received an average $5,528 for StarLink
claims, while elevators have received $4,616 on average. Some say Aventis
could end up paying more than $200 million in compensation.

The deadline for farmers to make a claim was Sept. 1, and more than 400
claims still await payment from Aventis. Aventis agreed to compensate
elevators for the genetically modified corn being mixed with traditional
corn. Farmers were paid a premium to keep it off the market by feeding it
to livestock.

About 135,000 acres of StarLink was grown last year in Iowa, accounting
for 40 percent of the U.S. corn acreage devoted to the GM crop. Estimates
put the number of bushels of Iowa corn contaminated by StarLink at up to 1
billion.

Aventis agreed to cover costs of farmers and elevators in 17 states,
including Iowa. The agreement also calls for Aventis paying farmers whose
corn was contaminated through cross-pollination or those who purchased corn
without being told it contained StarLink genetics.
