New EU Poll Shows 70% of Consumers Reject Frankenfoods

Majority oppose GM foods

A report prepared for the European Commission on consumer attitudes to
genetically modified foods and technology makes grim reading for those
keen to develop the European market.

More than 70 per cent do not want GM foods, while almost 60 per cent
believe the technology causes significant damage to the environment.
This adds weight to claims by some member states, led by France, that
lifting blocks on GM approvals, in response to Commission labelling
proposals, would be politically unpopular.

The survey was carried out in May and June by the EU's consumer survey
organisation Eurobarometer. As part of a survey on attitudes to
science and technology 16,000 people were questioned on their views of
the use of GMOs in farming and food production.

The results were based on responses to seven statements, but just 15
per cent saw the technology as safe and unlikely to pose dangers to
people or the environment.

On most of the questions the attitudes were hostile, with almost 95
per cent in all 15 member states saying they wanted a 'right to
choose' whether or not to eat GM foods.

The EC claims this supports its labelling approach.

On other questions 85 per cent said GMOs should only be introduced if
proved 'scientifically harmless' while 71 per cent simply said they
'did not want this type of food'.

Despite media reports describing as Frankenstein foods all those
containing any GM ingredients, just a third of consumers believed the
potential dangers had been exaggerated by the media.
