LANSING - Apr 28/01 - STAT --

Corn producers in the United States are being warned to avoid swearing in
writing that they are planting seed which has not been genetically
engineered or that it is "non-GMO."

Denise McWilliams, agronomist with the University of Minnesota Extension
Service, warns there is no requirement that require seed that is not genetically
modified needs to be tagged as non-GMO seed. The American Seed Trade
Association has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish a
standard and suggests a 1% maximum allowance of GMO seeds in a bag
tagged "non-GMO." This would be 800 seeds in a bag of corn with 80,000
seeds, or about 1,500 soybean seeds in a 50-pound bag of average soybeans.
