4/27 Safeway Rally - Lloyd Center

This message is a summary of the action on April 27th and a thank you to all
the people who helped make it happen. The rallies for safe food continue to
improve!

This is also an invitation for everyone to get more involved in NW Rage.

Together we will turn the tide!

As NW Rage arrived at Safeway on Saturday, it quickly became obvious that
something had changed. The usual Rage members were there along with a lot of
new faces. The signs were there... but wait a minute, Portland's finest were
already there as well. Actually, about six Portland police were present to "Both
protect the rights of the store and the protesters," they said.

We arrived at the site a little before 11:00 and were greeted with beautiful
blue skies. Unloading the signs and Franken-corn, we had to reanalyze the
situation given the police presence. The climate from the management was
calm and resolved. Two corporate execs from Clackamas were in attendance
(on a Saturday afternoon no less. Something tells me those were not regular
hours). We spoke with them about what was planned and how we would
conduct the event.

They offered us doughnuts. (Is that considered a bribe?)

Two news teams also arrived. One crew from Channel 8 and one crew from
Channel 49. Both stations taped the event and aired the footage that night. "Real"
TV news personalities certainly were a surprise for this organizer, but most
people seem to take it in stride.

Thus the event began, with horns honking, whistles blowing and bio-suit people
waking up the public. Over 25 people participated in all. We covered both
entrances and two of the driveways. Some people collected postcards and
petition signatures while others explained the risks and alternatives to genetically
engineered foods. We had rotating shifts at the Safeway windows to make sure
people in the grocery checkout line could read our signs. "Warning - You are
buying genetically engineered foods."

Great work everyone! Safeway is definitely aware of the genetically engineered
food issue. The police and press presence at the event are evidence of that
fact. Now we can continue to inform more Safeway customers... NO ONE likes
to learn they're being taken advantage of. Safeway Select contains Stealth
Frankenfood that is selling only because customers are in the dark.

Together, we're beginning to turn on the lights. Come on out and get involved!
