Friends
A colleague passed this email along to me...

"Recently, the presence of genetically modified (GMO) soy protein has
emerged as a hot topic among consumers, as well as experts in nutritional
and environmental science. Preference for the use of non-GMO soy protein
among consumers has grown significantly, and the trend continues upward.
Shaklee has been investigating options available to us regarding non-GMO
sources of soy protein for several years. The great news is that we have
finally identified and secured a source of soy protein that meets our
stringent standards for quality, and which is certified to not contain
GMOs. The certification standard that we are using is the most rigorous
available so that we can put our Shaklee guarantee on the product. We are
pleased to announce that Shaklee will be using non-GMO soy effective
February 2003.

Energizing Soy Protein, Instant Protein Soy Mix and the new Slim Plan Gold
have been reformulated to contain only non-GMO soy protein that has been
certified through an Identity Preserved Program (IPP) - the most reliable
approach to ensuring that soy protein remains non-GMO from the seed stage
through the manufacturing process. With the Identity Preserved Program,
Shaklee can now confidently make the statement, and keep the promise, that
our soy protein is certified non-genetically modified.

Shaklee has always used rigorous testing to ensure that raw materials are
safe, free from harmful contaminants, and that they meet our overall high
quality standards for potency, freshness, and efficacy, and we continue to
do so. We have always preferred to use non-GMO soy, but until the advent
of the Identity Preserved Program (IPP),there was no way to guarantee it.
And until recently, there has not been a reliable, constant source of
certified non-GMO soy raw ingredients. Market preference and reliable
availability of non-GMO soy have made it possible for us to offer IPP
certified non-GMO soy protein, at this time.

As might be expected, using a guaranteed non-genetically altered source of
soybeans is more expensive than the more widely available soy protein that
isn't certified non-GMO. For that reason, we waited until now to
determine appropriate new pricing for Energizing Soy Protein and Instant
Protein Soy Mix (these products did not take a price increase in October,
other than rounding). The new pricing reflects an increase of 5.6%, which
is carefully set to take into account competitive products in the
marketplace, increased costs and the enhanced value the non-GMO
certification adds to these unique formulations. The pricing for our new
Slim Plan Gold product will not change."

Sincerely,

Cindy Latham
