FIVE ARRESTED AFTER GM CROPS RIPPED UP;
DOZENS OF MASKED PROTESTERS BREAK AWAY
FROM DEMO TO DESTROY PLANTS

POLICE made five arrests for criminal damage after shadowing GM crops
protesters from Stratford on Saturday.

They swooped after what started as a peaceful protest moved from the town
centre to the nearby village of Long Marston and people began to destroy
oilseed rape. Officers were greatly outnumbered and had to watch many
attackers get away. Insp Geoff Beston, of Warwickshire Police, said: "There
was a procession, escorted by the police, through parts of the town to
coaches parked at the leisure centre.

"The coaches then went on to Long Marston and were joined by other anti-
GM eventgoers in minibuses.

"There was a further march through Long Marston village. Participants then
approached the GM crops trial site and invaded the field in large numbers.
Police officers made five arrests for criminal damage and the remaining
activists left the field."

Those arrested were a 22-year-old woman from Coventry, a 24-year-old
Leamington man, a 24-year-old woman from Oxford, a 28-year-old woman
from Leeds and a 20 -year-old Nottingham man.

They were taken to Leamington police station for interview and released on
bail.

Jenny Sansom, of OutCrop, which takes part in direct action, said
afterwards: "Those who were arrested feel they acted legitimately and
responsibly.

"We think the event was a success and has highlighted concerns about GM
crops and the effect on the environment.

There have been eight GM trials sites in Warwickshire, including Harbury,
Alderminster and Long Marston.

Trials near Wolston and Priors Marston were scrapped after local protests.
