Canada food irradiation update

Canada Irradiation Update

from The Record (Kitchener-Waterloo), October 16, 2002

While food irradiation has been approved in Canada for more than 30 years, only certain foods are permitted, not including meat. Health Canada is currently considering amendments to the food and drug regulations to permit the irradiation of ground beef.

The list of foods allowed to be irradiated in Canada includes: (1) potatoes and onions to inhibit sprouting; (2) wheat, flour and whole wheat flour to control insect infestation; and (3) whole or ground spices and dehydrated seasoning preparations to reduce the microbial load.

Currently, irradiation is not used widely on food available in Canada. So far, the main use of irradiation in Canada has been on spices. However, most of the spices available in Canada have not been irradiated. A food that has been irradiated must be identified by an international symbol and an accompanying statement such as "irradiated" or "treated with irradiation."
