Controversial Irradiation Facility Proposed for Honolulu International Airport

A controversial irradiation facility proposal that would bring nuclear material to the Honolulu International Airport will get a hearing before the NRC, according to an NRC decision earlier this week. The proposal to build the facility at the airport has been criticized by local residents for being located in a tsunami evacuation zone, vulnerable to terrorist threats, and near numerous military sites. Earthjustice, an environmental law firm, is objecting to the irradiation facility proposal and asking for an environmental review on behalf of Concerned Citizens of Honolulu, a grassroots community group.

Additionally, a filmmaker produced a short video about the efforts in Milford, PA to combat a food irradiation facility that located there several years ago, and was subsequently shut-down due to poor consumer demand for irradiated food.
