60% of Japanese housewives found they won't eat beef

October 20, 2001 Japan Economic Newswire
Despite the government's recent announcement that domestic beef is free of mad cow disease, roughly 60% of Japanese housewives in a Kyodo News survey said they will not eat beef.

The Kyodo poll of 100 housewives aged 26 to 86 across Japan showed that 74 of the housewives have stopped eating beef and 63 of them have no appetite for beef despite the government's declaration Thursday that domestic beef is free of mad cow disease. The remaining 26 people said beef is safe so long as dangerous portions are excluded.

Many skeptical housewives said they suspect the government is covering up the mad cow scandal.

Only eight housewives in the Kyodo poll said they accept the government explanation and will start eating beef again.

All of the roughly 1.3 million cows to be slaughtered in the coming year for human consumption are subject to preliminary examinations to be conducted at 117 meat hygiene inspection centers across Japan.
