Germany set to deliver 6,000 tonnes of beef to North Korea

The export of some 6,000 tonnes of German beef to North Korea has been approved by Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture Minister Renate Kuenast and is expected to begin in the last week of September, her ministry announced Friday.

The possibility of supplying North Korea's hungry population with German beef has been discussed for months as an alternative to slaughtering and burning cattle culled under a European Union program to help eradicate mad cow disease and support the European beef market. The German ministry said it had received a letter this week from its North Korean counterpart accepting the German conditions for the delivery and distribution of the meat.

Among these conditions are that the total amount be delivered in roughly equal portions to four different North Korean seaports, the ministry said.

The German government is bearing the cost of buying up the meat and delivering it to North Korean ports.

Like food aid provided by the World Food Programme to the hungry and politically-isolated communist state, the meat is intended for distribution to children, the sick, and expectant or nursing mothers, the German ministry statement said.

Supervision of the distribution would be according to WFP standards under the responsibility of the German foreign economic cooperation and development ministry.

The beef will be shipped from the German port of Wilhelmshaven.
