11 more cases of BSE in past week

February 16, 2002 The Irish Times by Sean Macconnell
The upward trend in the number of BSE cases being detected in the national herd continued this week with the confirmation of 11 new ones by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.

Seven of the cases were found in knackeries and one was detected in the mandatory testing carried out on all animals over 30 months going into the food chain. The remaining three cases were found in the traditional way - by farmers reporting a sick animal to their vet, which is described as passive surveillance by the Department of Agriculture.

The new cases bring to 61 the number of cases detected since the beginning of the year and brings the total of cases found here since 1989 to 903.

The youngest animal detected this week was six years old and came from a dairy farm in Co Waterford.

The number of cases has increased dramatically since active surveillance was introduced 18 months ago ahead of an EU requirement to test all animals, even those not going into the food chain, to determine the exact levels of BSE in the Union.

A fourth person in France is believed to have died from the human form of bovine spongiform encephalopathy disease, a health research institute said yesterday. The man, aged about 30 and living in central France, died on Sunday night in hospital.
