Madison -- Six wild white-tailed fawns have tested positive for
chronic wasting disease in the state's testing of thousands of deer
for the disease, officials said Tuesday.
The announcement is significant because it shows some deer are stricken by the disease much younger than previously suspected, said Julie Langenberg, a Department of Natural Resources veterinarian. Authorities previously reported that chronic wasting disease did not appear to show up in white-tailed deer until an age of about 16 months. The six infected fawns were all shot in the area near Mount Horeb where chronic wasting disease has infected the herd. |
