Suspect Animal Tests Negative for Mad Cow
November 23, 2004 5:23:00 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An animal suspected of mad cow disease tested negative for the illness in a second round of more sophisticated testing, the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Tuesday.

``The USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa, has determined that the inconclusive screening test sample reported on Nov. 18 has tested negative for BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) upon confirmatory testing,'' said John Clifford, deputy administrator for USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

The U.S. Agriculture Department ordered the additional tests last Thursday after two preliminary tests yielded inconclusive results in a bovine sent to slaughter.
