Purina Mills response to FDA concerns "unsatisfactory" - WSJ

April 16, 2001 Reuters

NEW YORK, April 16 (Reuters) - Purina Mills Inc. has received a warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration, saying that two separate inspections found that it failed to follow FDA rules, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition on Monday.

The letter said that the inspections found that Purina Mills had failed to ensure that drugs used in animal feed don't harm animals or humans, the Journal reported.

It said that numerous attempts to reach Purina officials were unsuccessful.

The letter, dated March 23, said the mill's written response to the FDA's concerns about its findings was ``unsatisfactory'' in several areas, the report said.

The agency said the company failed to provide certain documentation proving that it was in compliance with FDA rules, and that employees are properly trained, the paper said.

A poorly trained employee caused the January incident that resulted in 1,222 Texas cattle eating feed containing byproducts of other cows, in violation of agency rules to prevent the spread of mad cow disease, the paper noted.

The recent FDA letter said problems with improper labeling for bagged medicated feeds date back to June 2000, the paper reported.

Shares of Purina Mills closed down 10 cents at $10.60 on Thursday, off a 52-week high of $15, up from a year low of $7.44.
