Eleven cows killed in Slovakia today after 3rd confirmed BSE case

November 15, 2001 Czech News Agency
LUCENEC, Central Slovakia, Nov 15 (CTK) - All the selected 11 cows from the Agrotom farm in Podrecany where the third mad-cow disease (BSE) case had been confirmed were slaughtered today, head of the Regional Veterinary Administration in Lucenec Jan Barkac confirmed to CTK.

"Samples from each of the cows have been sent to the State Veterinary Institute of Zvolen for tests and the dead cows to the N-Adova carcass disposal plant of Nitra," he added. The results of the tests will be known on Friday afternoon. "If the lab confirms the disease in some of the animals, another 12 dairy cows from the concerned herd will be killed," Barkac said. To date Agrotom has bred 95 cattle at the Podrecany farm and a further 700 cows at other farms in Tomasovce and Lehotka. Only cattle from domestic breed were at the Podrecany farm. For the moment the company puts losses caused by BSE at several hundreds of millions of Slovak crowns.

The Slovak Central Agricultural Controlling and Testing Institute has checked 441 documents from fodder suppliers, of which 91 concerned milk replacers. During the check, not a single case of meat and bone meal processing was discovered, Agriculture Ministry spokeswoman Anna Majkutova said earlier.

More than a month ago, tests confirmed the first Slovak case of mad cow disease in a six-year old cow bred in Central Slovakia, and the second case was detected two weeks ago, also in Central Slovakia. The source of the disease has not yet been determined in any of the two cases.
