Mad Cow Suspected on Swedish Farm

September 20, 2001 Associated Press
A dairy farm in northern Sweden has been quarantined pending test results after two suspected cases of mad cow disease were detected, officials said Wednesday.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture said the farm was sealed off after "weak suspicions" of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, as mad cow disease formally is known, were detected in two 3-year-old dairy cows. Results from preliminary tests were expected Thursday, with final results expected in about two weeks.

The cows were slaughtered Tuesday after showing symptoms linked to mad cow disease, including "difficulty in moving, stiffness...and wobbliness," veterinary inspector Inger Nilsson said.

In the past year, Sweden has had a few reports of mad cow disease, but tests so far have shown them to be false alarms. Roughly 18,000 animals have been tested in Sweden since late last year.

Mad cow disease is believed linked to a deadly human ailment, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. More than 100 Europeans have been diagnosed with variant CJD in the last five years, mostly in Britain.
