July 20, 2001 INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FISH AND WILDLIFE AGENCIES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: July 20, 2001

You Are Invited to the Chronic Wasting Disease Symposium September 15-17, in Wichita

You are invited to the first Chronic Wasting Disease Symposium, September 15 -17, 2001, at the Hyatt Regency in Wichita, Kansas. This meeting is held in conjunction with the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Annual Meeting, September 12-15.

The Chronic Wasting Disease Symposium provides a forum for groups and regulatory agencies to summarize current information about the disease and present the status of management programs to control it. The meeting will improve communication between organizations and agencies and explore ways to handle this issue. More than 20 speakers have been invited. While primarily a scientific symposium, it also is a public forum for information exchange. The meeting will create an atmosphere for scientists, administrators and concerned citizens to propose solutions.

Who should attend Chronic Wasting Disease crosses the regulatory authorities of many agencies. Representatives from state and federal agencies, conservation groups and the public are invited to attend. In particular, the symposium should interest those involved in:

wildlife management

livestock breeding and management (including alternative livestock such as captive cervids)

veterinary medicine

public health

elk and deer advocacy and conservation groups.

Sponsors Sponsors include International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Kansas Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, North American Elk Breeders Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
