Germans shunning schnitzel - 4,000 new vegetarians each week

September 30, 2001 Deutsche Presse-Agentur
In a "wurst" case scenario for the meat industry, Germans are becoming vegetarians at the rate of 4,000 a week, according to a new survey.

The survey by the Forsa Institute, released to coincide with World Vegetarian Day on October 1, says consumers in Germany have lost faith in the beef and pork industry in the wake of the Mad Cow disease scare and scandals involving tainted pork. The results of the survey of 4,000 people in Germany reflect a major turnabout in eating habits in a country synonymous with sizzling sausages and boiled pig knuckles surround ed by steaming mounds of sauerkraut and dumplings.

Forsa researchers said the turning point came immediately after the first cases of Mad Cow disease were reported in Germany last November.

The trend also reflects growing health awareness and concerns over longterm health issues such as cancer and heart disease among 21st Century Germans, the researchers.
