GE workers suing Monsanto over PCB claims

A group of nearly 600 local General Electric employees is suing the Monsanto Company in a $2 billion product liability lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed in state Supreme Court in Manhattan last month. The 590 GE workers involved in the lawsuit claim personal injury and fear of future illness from exposure to PCBs in and around Schenectady's GE Energy plant.

Monsanto manufactured PCBs for decades before the chemicals were banned by Congress in 1977. The lawsuit claims Monsanto continued to sell PCBs while being aware of the potential health risks.

Officials with the union representing the workers said the employees were never told about the dangers involved with handling the substance.

Saint Louis-based Monsanto said the company doesn't think it has any liability in the lawsuit.
