Italy Calls for Ban on Monsanto Seed Imports

Italy minister asks for Monsanto licence suspended

ROME, March 28 (Reuters) - Italian Farm Minister Alfonso Pecoraro
Scanio has asked Milan authorities to suspend the seed import licence
of U.S. agricultural biotechnology group Monsanto (NYSE:MON -
news), a Farm Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

The request by Pecoraro Scanio, a member of the Greens, followed
the seizure in northern Italy of maize and soybeans imported by Monsanto
which were suspected of containing genetically engineered material, he said.

``The minister has asked the prefect of Milan to suspend Monsanto's seed
import licence,'' the spokesman told Reuters.

Monsanto officials were not immediately available for comment.
