Alert--Tell Congress Not to Cut Funds for CSP, A Key Sustainable Agriculture Program

ALERT! CSP BUDGET IS THREATENED!

March 24, 2005

Last week the House of Representatives passed a budget resolution calling for $5.3 billion in cuts in mandatory spending for agriculture programs (including the Conservation Security Program, commodity supports, and nutrition programs). The Senate resolution calls for cutting $2.8 billion.

The House and Senate will attempt to reconcile their differences in Conference when they reconvene after Spring Recess, on April 4.

THE CONSERVATION SECURITY PROGRAM (CSP) WILL BE TARGETED FOR CUTS! Yet CSP
has never been funded at its authorized level, and last year, CSP was cut to
finance disaster relief. CSP should not be cut any further!

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVE BY APRIL 4:

--- Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to Reach Their DC
Offices.

--- Ask To Leave A Message or To Speak With Staff Handling the Agriculture
Budget.

--- Or Send a FAX. (Mailing letters take too long, since they are screened for anthrax; and emails get lost.) You can get FAX numbers after you are connected by the switchboard.

-- You can use a sample FAX at: http://www.agmatters.net/Stewardship/CSP_SampleLetter.doc

YOUR MESSAGE IS SIMPLE:

1. Don’t Make Budget Cuts In Conservation Programs We Need These
Programs!

2. The Conservation Security Program (CSP) Has Already Taken Cuts. (Last year, cuts were taken from CSP for Disaster Relief.)

3. CSP Is Severely Under-Funded -- Serving Farmers in Less Than 10% of the Nation’s Watersheds.

4. Preserve Funds for Conservations Programs by Placing Limits on
Commodity Payments. The top 5% of all farmers are receiving more than 75 % of all commodity payments!

OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO:

-- Attend events with your Representative and Senators while they are in your home district, and urge them to strengthen, not cut, conservation programs.

-- Write letters to your local paper expressing your concern.

THANK YOU!
